A Brief History of the Hershey Chocolate Company
In the small city of Hershey, Pennsylvania is a company that is
synonymous with everything chocolate. The Hershey Company is famous for Hershey
Chocolate in all its various incarnations. The company itself is less than
one-hundred years old but it has a distinguished history in the chocolate making
world.
Hershey Company did not begin of its own accord. In fact it was a little known
subsidiary of the Lancaster Caramel Company which got its start back in 1893.
They started out producing chocolate and cocoa purely for baking purposes by
their parent company. As time passed their chocolate products began to become
more in demand and in time Hershey Company became a real company, incorporating
on October 24, 1927.
The founder of the Hershey Company, Wilton S. Hershey, came from humble
beginnings. He was never formally educated and started and failed at several
business ventures before entering the chocolate making field. He was able to tap
into peoples desire and need for good chocolate and the rest, as they say, is
history.
When Wilton founded the Hershey Company his hard times ended and the prospect of
bankruptcy was forever banished. He was able to lead his company in a chocolate
marketing campaign that allowed Hershey to expand its product line to satiate
the appetite of a chocolate hungry public. The Hershey Company continued to
manufacture its baking chocolate products for the home and baking industry but
it also began to deliver industry standard setting candy bars, including its
world famous Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar, and sweets. The icing on the cake, so
to speak, was the development of the milk chocolate manufacturing process by
Milton Hershey and his company. This process allowed Hershey to create its
chocolate products much cheaper than its competitors and made its chocolate
affordable to just about everyone.
The Hershey Company has continued to grow over the years and today it employs
over 13,000 people around the world. Not only does Hershey produce its myriad of
chocolate products that everyone enjoys it also is something of a tourist
attraction. At its Hershey PA headquarters is located Chocolate World, Hershey’s
museum attraction that brings people from all over the world who are interested
in the history of the company, its products and how the chocolate itself is made
from only quality ingredients that must meet stringent Hershey standards before
use. For any chocolate lover a visit to Hershey’s Chocolate World is a must if
you are vacationing in the area.
